...they changed my life a lot. There [are] some things in my life that I stopped just because of the messages that came from Future Talk. ...the Alpha course was very strong and touching.
— Student 1
It is a peaceful place. They told us things that our parents were scared to tell us. They were like our mothers and fathers.
— Student 2
I love Future Talk, even if I felt stressed, the feeling would be over at the end of the day. I realised that it’s all because of Jesus, and they prayed for us every moment.
— Student 3
The first time I heard about Future Talk, I didn’t want to go because I didn’t like it when people talked about Jesus. Then my best friend was like, “Let’s try it out.” So we went there, and it was really exciting and joyful for us. I thank Future Talk. It taught me a lot of things I didn’t know about Jesus.
— Student 4
Future Talk helped me, because sometimes I felt like I wanted to kill myself... but then the leaders had a meaningful chat with me, and that really saved my life.
— Student 5
The leaders are always smiling even if we do something wrong.
— Student 6
I like the fact that Future Talk gets people from all over the world to come and talk to us about Jesus.
— Student 7
Future Talk was the best thing that I had in my life this year. It helped me to reach out to God. People changed after Future Talk. Some started believing in God and some started going to church.
— Student 8
If I had a problem that was bothering me, I could share it with one of the leaders. They showed me ways to solve my problems.
— Student 9
Jesus changed my life.

This was some of the feedback from the 12 and 13 year-olds that were a part of the Future Talk program in 2016. These Grade 7 students come from Westlake Primary School and Capricorn Primary School, and Westlake and Capricorn Park are two communities that really have the odds stacked against them. Extreme school dropout rates, high unemployment, drug abuse, gangsterism, and high suicide rates are just some of the issues faced by these youth—on a regular basis.

Pioneered by Ronald Abels, a local leader who is impacting his community, Future Talk’s mission is simple: to restore hope, change mindsets, and help others reimagine their futures. Every week throughout the year, Future Talk's diverse and energetic group of leaders work with the students. They aim to bring the youngsters hope by talking with them about who Jesus is.

The leaders hailed from all over the world—people of different backgrounds, languages, and races all serving one God and with one message. This diversity made some of the students want to travel the world when they leave school. They started to dream big! The leaders’ own testimonies of having to travel and leave behind family inspired the students to trust God through challenging circumstances.

“You are the future leaders of your community and of your country.” The students were often told this throughout the year. They began to realize that they could start by being good role models for the kids in the younger grades as well as a positive influence in the lives of people they meet on the streets.

It’s one thing for a leader to notice a change in an individual, but it's another thing entirely for the individual to see the change in themselves. The transformative power of the Gospel never ceases to amaze. Future Talk is just one example of how a relationship with Jesus and loving people can bring hope, encourage, save lives, bring peace, and promise breakthrough.
