Cape Town's Culture, Part I

Cape Town, the Mother City, Kaapstad... all names used to describe our beautiful home that oozes diversity and culture. It was named the #2 city in the world to visit in 2017 by Lonely Planet, and we couldn’t agree more!

With its incredible contrasted landscapes of ocean and mountain, endless choices of things to do, see, and eat, and mix of local and international cultures, it truly is a city among cities.

Rich in history and cultural heritage, Cape Town hosts more than 1.5 million tourists each year who visit the city to experience both its natural beauty and incredible people—those that make Cape Town a truly unforgettable place. Visit Cape Town, and you will very quickly discover how friendly and hospitable the local “Capetonians" are. We love to show off our city and spoil our guests by inviting them into our homes for a meal or letting them in on our local “secret spots” that are a bit off the beaten tourist track.

Cape Town has also become home to people from all over the globe and from all walks of life, including many international celebrities.

The history of Cape Town is perhaps not as glamorous though, and the effects of Apartheid are still very evident. A 15-minute drive can take you from multimillion dollar homes perched along prime beachfront property to tin shanti houses with no running water or electricity. The result of the "relocation of land" in the 1960s involved forcibly moving people into certain areas of the city according to their race. The knowledge of our sad and mottled history often comes at a big surprise and wake up call for people visiting Cape Town for the first time.

Lavender Hill is one of the communities that was created through the Land Reallocation Act. Large housing projects were built, and non-whites were moved there.

The terrible atrocities of the apartheid regime, however, cannot beat the redeeming grace and love of God! When you visit Lavender Hill, you will be met by a tight knit community of the most hospitable and comedic people you'll ever come across... a place where everyone is family!

All of our ministry partners are men and women of peace who have a deep passion and heart for their communities and who have given of themselves, their time, their finances, and their energy to speak into the lives and hearts of their neighbors. Lavender Hill is changing from the inside out one person at a time because of these warriors for Jesus!

It is an absolute pleasure and honor to partner with these friends and brothers and sisters in Christ. If your heart is stirred by this story of redemption that we are seeing happen in our Cape Town communities, please contact us to see how you can get involved.
